Submission Guidelines
Mayor's Award for Excellence in Book Illustration
Note: the 2010 award has yet to be annouced!
The award is for artistic excellence. Nominators should only submit books that they deem to be outstanding in this regard. In order to be eligible, nominated illustrators must be residents of HRM and their books must have been published during the previous calendar year and have been available in bookstores in HRM.
- Illustrated books must be a minimum of 24 pages in length
- All books must have an ISBN
- Self-published books are eligible
- Books must be a first edition Canadian or foreign trade book
- Books may be submitted only once. The Selection Committee reserves the right to accept or reject submitted titles. Rejected titles will not be returned
Nominations may be made by professional or self-publishing book publishers that:
(1) pay royalties or financially compensate the illustrator;
(2) distribute their works through normal book selling channels
AND/OR by any citizen of HRM, or bookseller, as long as nominated books conform to the criteria listed above for publishers. Citizens and booksellers should communicate with publishers to express interest in nominating and to ensure that there is no duplication of effort.

Re: Mayor's Award for Excellence in Book Illustration
The Selection Committee will be comprised of:
- An HRM visual artist as recognized and nominated by Visual Arts Nova Scotia
- A representative of a local bookseller
- A representative of the Halifax Public Library
Committee members cannot be nominated for this award, nor related to any nominees, and can stand for no more than three consecutive terms.
Watch for this seal--a sign of excellence in Atlantic Canadian writing and publishing.
