2017 ATLANTIC BOOK AWARDS SHORTLIST / LISTE DES CANDIDATS SÉLECTIONNÉS POUR LES PRIX LITTÉRAIRES DE L’ATLANTIQUE DE 2017

The Atlantic Book Awards Society is pleased to announce the shortlist for the eight different book prizes comprising the 2017 Atlantic Book Awards. The 22 nominated titles represent a wide range of books from Atlantic Canada—everything from history to kids’ books.

The Awards will be given out in Paul O’Regan Hall, Halifax Central Library, on Thursday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. This year’s Pioneer Award will also be awarded to someone from Nova Scotia who has made a substantial contribution to the literary life of the region.

Among familiar names on the shortlist are Newfoundland writer Lisa Moore for her children’s book Flannery (Groundwood Books); first book (but prolific playwright) author Charlie Rhindress for I’m Not What I Seem: The many stories of Rita MacNeil’s life (Formac Publishing); and ex-broadcaster Phonse Jessome for his work of fiction, Disposable Souls (Nimbus Publishing/Vagrant Press). Two books are nominated in two categories: Bookthug’s Notes from a Feminist Killjoy: Essays on Everyday Life by Erin Wunker is nominated for the Margaret and John Savage First Book Awards and the Atlantic Book Award for Scholarly Writing; and Sable Island in Black and White by Jill Martin Bouteillier (Nimbus Publishing) is short-listed for the Robbie Robertson Dartmouth Book Award (Non-fiction) and the Democracy 250 Atlantic Book Award for Historical Writing.

The region’s book publishers are represented on the shortlist with eleven of the nominations going to books published by Atlantic publishers. Halifax’s Nimbus Publishing leads with four shortlisted titles, and Fernwood Publishing has two nominations. Other regional publishers include Island Studies Press (PEI), Breakwater Books and Creative Book Publishing (NL), Bouton d’or Acadie (NB) and Formac Publishing (NS).
